It is market economy. If they are willing to spend money on it, why not? But, as a consumer, you may choose not to spend your money on that bland shiny shit, however. Unfortunately, I can't think of better alternatives to it in the Boston area. Sigh.

So, how is "ENVIRONMENT! and CLIMATE-CHANGING!" related to consumer willing to buy available electricity in order to do its business? Should it be forbidden to do so? Should it choose to do so voluntarily (it did not)? Should electricity cost more (it does not)?

Why is that kind of wasting electricity (resources) required to do their business (maybe it should work like the light show at airports :P )? Is that really necessary? Has the Marriot nothing else to (re)present? I´m too tired to talk/write about Environment and so on. At all (unnatural)light is a kind of environmental pollution (like Rene already described in his writing). Noise also...

So, you fly several times a year to the states (huge carbon footprint), drive a gas-guzzler car here a lot (all those trips around New England) and support non-energy efficient businesses (Marriott). You also eat meat and support the largest polluter and global warming contributor on the planet (food industry). It is really incredibly wasteful of you... you and Marriott are harming the planet. What do you say?

Well, Germany stinks to high heavens... that is really a fact and not a question. The question is: why you do the things you do that harm the planet? (I could have asked Marriott too but I do not know it personally).

Additionally you ask question in a way that already implies that no answer will satisfy you. So, my only response is a sarcastic response to, at least, entertain you.

Discussions work best when you present your opinion in a way that challenges a response or you simply ask for thoughts of other people. Discussions do not work when you challenge people directly instead of the response.

So, the article is my opinion (wasting money by wasting energy), your opinion was "just business", which is fine for me.

And I cannot stay in another hotel because the hotel is set by my client as travel requirement. By the way, the reason for choosing the Marriot was - you can walk to work.

Again, you think it is a waste of money, Marriott - does not. It is not your money, it Marriott's. They think that it is not waste. Period. Very simple. In reverse:... I think that traveling to the states few times a year is environmentally wasteful. It is your buisness... not mine... and sarcastic response to such a silly question of mine is quite justified.

Flying is necessary for business. My choice. So I have to save energy somewhere else... such as real cups, less meat, no water plastic bottles anymore, instead tap water.

Totally legitimate. For Marriott, lighting it up is necessary for business (I will skip the argument list here). You both waste energy for business. ... coal vs co2 is a small insignificant factor. The real challenge (whining is easy) is to actually make real sacrifices for energy conservation (not flying, not supporting energy wasting businesses, do not drive/buy gas guzzling cars, be a vegetarian, etc) which are preciously few people are making... and understandably so.

@Rene: Das Dein Artikel nicht auf das Klima usw abzielte konnte ich lesender weise erkennen. Verschwendung eben. Doch habe ich ja auch Umwelt geschrieben. Und dieses Licht, so wie auch Lärm ist eine Umweltbelastung. Das was Du ja auch geschrieben hast (schlafen usw.) Keine Ahnung wie man einem Sturkopf so etwas verständlich machen soll...

@all: Guys, opinions are important and the have to discussed in a fair and open way. Otherwise we do not convince each other, instead we just raise the wall between our views.

@Andreas: On the tone. Look at two messages before your last post for an example of a discussion. Do not expect somebody will honor you with respectful answer to your irate and hysterical comment. (I do not and take them as they come :)). My general impression with Germans is that they expect an American/non-German to shut up and listen and be lectured while replying politely to irate and aggressive tirades. My experiments on Germans also shown that when confronted with unexpected response they flip out, get out of their tracks and start to hysterically lecture even more, whine and complain :)

I think Spiegel had an article about the same cultural experience of American students.

Ja ich habe durchaus gesehen das Du Dich angestrengt hast normal zu Diskutieren doch kommt das irgendwie mindestens einen Tag zu spät.
Und ich bin auch nicht hier um Dir was beizubringen. Wie(so) sollte ich auch.

Wenn Deine "Experimente" alle persönlich geworden sind kann ich das Verhalten der Deutschen die Du kennst verstehen. Wie viele sind es denn gewesen? Und wie lange ist das her? Waren ja vieleicht andere Zeiten damals.

Fakt ist das ich diese Beleuchtung, wie auch andere Dinge als absolute Verschwendung ansehe. Wenigstens zu bestimmten Zeit könnte man das Licht wenigstens ausschalten, schon alleine der Gäste wegen. Das durch die Stromkosten gesparte Geld könnte man auf die Zimmerpreise umschlagen -> auch Werbung. Aber das ist wohl nun wieder zu kindisch einfach gedacht von mir.
Um hier kein Missverständnis aufzubauen, ich bin keine ??kofreak oder sowas. Auch ich bin (meiner Meinung nach) Beispielsweise verschwenderisch mit Strom. Mindestens ein Rechner läuft beim mir 20h am Tag. Nein nicht wegen Downloads oder so (Emails, ICQ, Studium etc. ...) nur bin ich mir dessen bewusst und setzte wenigstens in so weit den Hebel am Stromverbrauch an das ich den Monitor dann doch ausschalte wenn ich wohl etwas länger nicht da bin. Klar schlecht zu vergleichen usw. aber das soll nur ein Beispiel dafür sein das man auch Verschwenderisch sein kann und doch irgendwo Grenzen ziehen kann und sollte. Einige jedoch haben die Grenze vieleicht etwas hoch gelegt. Wie eben das schöne Beispiel des Hotels welcher in dem Artikel auf den ich jetzt so schön zurück komme darstellt.

I have worked for a year for very Germanic company here in the States (German managers, collegues, etc) and I have worked with a few Germans, which I am friends with, in American companies before. Long ago I have learned to read German just for fun and regularly follow Der Spiegel and other German press. I have relatives and friends living in Germany. Myself, I have never been there.

My generalizations above are half-serious but not completely frivolous. I also found, involuntarily, a huge cultural difference between those from East and those from the West.

So langsam scheinen wir zwei uns ja auch einer normalen Diskusion anzunähern, auch wenn wir wohl nie Freunde werden ;)

Kulturelle Differenzen zwischen Ost und West? Natürlich, es gab da ja auch So was wie ne Wall... ;) ! Die Ostdeutschen sind eher zurückhaltend und die Westdeutschen... naja das gegenteil...
Aber das ist ein anderes Thema.

Verwandschaft in den USA hab ich nicht, aber in Kanada und mit denen komme ich auch gut zurecht ;) achja englische Presse lese ich nicht, aber CNN sehe ich des öfteren ;)

Watching CNN?!!! Please, stop. US mass media is utter and complete joke and should be perceived as such. I do my part and am boycotting it. There are normal source of info here, however.

Ossis/Wessis. My impressions. Ossi: boots Germaness down one's throat, some inferiority complex, aggressive, could be racist, very negative and whinning. Wessi: cosmopolitan, open-minded, unless explicitly asked or determined by accent, could be mistaken for Dutch, Danish or some other "European", can whine to some extent.
