I'd NEVER buy one. I only buy American made cars, and this one is made in Europe. An import is an import even if it has a GM label on it. I guess I'll have to wait for Honda to put their diesel engine in their American made Civic. If GM was smart, they would show some loyalty and dedication to the USA and make the cars here. Instead they will piss on America and import the cars from Europe against an unfavorable exchange rate making the car either more expensive or less profitable than it needs to be. They'll probably even play "Our Country" on the commercials for the car.

My answer in the forum:

"I only buy American!" Nice statement. But what about all the supermarkets filled with goods from all over the world, mostly China and Middle America. Would about these things?

GM is doing right to try to get at least a small market share. Most GM cars, as well as Ford and DaimlerChrysler are not ready for the change to smaller and more fuel efficient. Even latest models, like the Ford Fusion are too thirsty.

I think, GM will produce the car in the US when sales are promising enough. Why setup a production line now with a big investment when you can test the market first? The big three are losing money with nearly every car they make. Why not play a zero game and sell at least some hope?

The bad thing is only, that GM can not return any car to Europe, because they would simply not sell there. Too big, too thirsty, some of them too old fashioned or cheap. The new Saturn Aura would be an option but it is already based on the European Opel/Vauxhall Vectra, so the market has already this type of car (besides of necessary changes to the engine, they would have to make). Only the hybrid version with a diesel engine instead of the gasoline one would sell quite well here I think.

The European Astra has also a version with a Volkswagen GTI like engine, but GM wants the market share from the Japanese car makers not from it's own line of sports/sporty cars. So, this type of car should stay home.

Just some things about me: I am German, spending about 50% of the year in the US (New England). Most rentals I had are about 20-25mpg suburban traffic and 27-32mpg highway - going about 70mph.

My private car, an Opel Signum (Vectra line) with a 1.9 liter diesel (including a particle filter) has an average mileage of 34 mpg since I bought it. This includes 100 to 110 mph on the Autobahn. Going not faster than 70mph on the Autobahn brings it down to 40 mpg. Suburban traffic is about 28-32mpg.

Dude... I got bored reading your long-winded response. Having read "I'd NEVER buy one. I only buy American made cars, and this one is made in Europe" I would just pass on on that knuckledragger...
